The Sunday School Literacy Program

Combining Faith and Learning
The Sunday School Support Initiative (SSSI) represents a unique approach to addressing illiteracy in our communities. By integrating literacy education with Sunday school programs, we're able to reach children in a familiar, comfortable environment where they already gather regularly.
The Challenge
Nigeria faces significant literacy challenges, with millions of children unable to read or write at grade level. Many of these children attend Sunday school but struggle with reading biblical texts and understanding lessons due to literacy barriers.
Our Solution
The SSSI program provides:
Structured Literacy Curriculum
- Age-appropriate reading materials
- Phonics and comprehension exercises
- Writing and spelling practice
- Interactive learning activities
Faith-Based Integration
- Bible stories as reading practice
- Scripture memorization support
- Character development through literature
- Moral education alongside literacy
Program Structure
Duration: 12-week cycles Frequency: Every Sunday after regular Sunday school Class Size: 15-20 students per teacher Age Range: 6-14 years
What Makes This Program Special
- Familiar Environment: Children learn in spaces they already know and trust
- Consistent Attendance: Regular Sunday attendance ensures continuity
- Community Support: Parents and church members actively participate
- Holistic Development: We nurture both mind and spirit
Results We've Achieved
Since launching SSSI, we've seen tremendous progress:
- 200+ children enrolled across 8 churches
- 75% improvement in reading levels
- 90% attendance rate
- Strong parental involvement and support
The Spiritual Impact
Beyond literacy, this program has strengthened children's connection to their faith. They can now read and understand scripture independently, participate more actively in church activities, and serve as role models for younger children.
Partner Churches
We're grateful to our partner churches who have opened their doors and hearts to this initiative. Their commitment to both spiritual and educational development has been instrumental in our success.
Expanding the Program
Due to overwhelming demand, we're actively seeking partnerships with more churches across Lagos and beyond. If your church is interested in hosting an SSSI program, we provide:
- Trained volunteer teachers
- All learning materials
- Program curriculum and structure
- Ongoing support and monitoring
How You Can Help
- Volunteer as a literacy teacher
- Donate books and learning materials
- Sponsor a child's participation
- Help us expand to more churches
Together, we can combat illiteracy while nurturing the next generation of faithful, literate leaders.
