Summer School 2025: 200 Children Gain a Head Start
Summer School 2025: 200 Children Gain a Head Start
This past July, over 200 children between the ages of 7 and 15 attended our annual Summer School programme in Lagos. Spread across three community centres, the three-week intensive brought together volunteer teachers, local mentors, and enthusiastic learners for a summer none of them will forget.
What We Taught
The curriculum this year focused on three pillars:
- Literacy & Reading Comprehension — Many of our students arrive reading below their grade level. Daily one-hour reading sessions combined with storytelling workshops helped close that gap significantly.
- Basic Numeracy & Financial Literacy — We introduced age-appropriate financial concepts alongside maths, teaching children about saving, budgeting, and the value of money.
- Creative Arts & Expression — Drama, drawing, and music gave children a safe space to express themselves and build confidence.
By the Numbers
At the end of the programme, we assessed progress across all enrolled children:
- 78% improved their reading fluency score by at least one grade level
- 91% said they felt more confident in maths
- 100% received a daily nutritious meal, funded by our food bursary partners
Voices from the Classroom
"I used to hate reading because the words made no sense. Now I read to my little sister every night." — Amara, age 10
"The teachers here actually listen to you. I didn't know school could feel like this." — Chidi, age 13
Thank You
None of this would have been possible without our 34 volunteer teachers, our corporate sponsors, and everyone who donated to our summer fund drive. If you'd like to support next year's programme, visit our Donate page — every contribution directly funds a child's place.
